Miquel Canals is Director of the Department of Earth and Ocean Dynamics at the University of Barcelona (Spain). His areas of research interest include global change and the ocean, high-energy oceanographic processes and their consequences, paleoceanography and paleoclimatology, and anthropogenic impacts on marine ecosystems. Since 2019, he has been a member of the Mission Assembly for Healthy Oceans, Seas and Inland Waters, one of the five transdisciplinary initiatives of Horizon Europe, the European Union’s framework research program for the years 2021-2027, and co-chair of the Technical Group on Seabed Habitats and Sea-floor Integrity, part of the Common Implementation Strategy for the EU’s Marine Strategy Framework Directive. Associate Editor of the journal Progress in Oceanography, he was a co-recipient of the European Archaeological Heritage Prize 2020 for his role in the SPLASHCOS project.
